Neon, Karma und Screen printing

Druck Berlin: Tell us something about your work!
Laura: I am a photographer – that means, I practically think in images. But I love screen printing, this manual, crafty component of work. Since most of my motives are photo-based, I often use raster graphics. Each piece of work is always an experiment – when I start creating the screen printing film on the computer, I do have a picture, or vision in mind, but what you get out of it in the end, is the result of a process. In a photo lab, this would be totally different, all parameters are set precisely.
Druck Berlin: How did you start with screen printing?
Laura: During my studies at the Academy of Arts in Munich, I needed 100 posters with 7 different motives – screen printing was the only option for that!
Druck Berlin: How did you come up with the ‘Königsdiziplinen Editionen‘?
Laura: The editions were born out of an idea of bringing together my beloved screen printing and appreciated artist colleagues in one collection. The artists select the motives, but the color – black and neon, and the format of the edition is fixed.
Druck Berlin: Who is taking part?
Laura: Different disciplines come together in one collection – painting, street art, photography, illustration, drawing and collage. The consistent coloring creates something whole, while at the same time the various, individual styles of working are emphasized. I really like the fact, that screen printing creates affordable and tasty art, but each print still remains unique.
Druck Berlin: What are you currently working on?
Laura: I am printing my new series ‘Karma‘ – a series of indian gods being re-imagined. I‘ll practically present them publicly for the first time at the Druck Berlin Festival!

Druck Berlin: Erzähl uns was zu deiner Arbeit.
Laura: Ich bin Fotografin, das heißt ich denke in Bildern. Aber ich liebe Siebdruck, auch handwerklich zu arbeiten. Die Grundlage meiner Motive sind Fotos; deshalb arbeite ich sehr viel mit Rastern. Jede neue Arbeit ist immer auch ein Experiment. Ich habe zwar beim Anlegen der Filme am Computer eine bestimmte Vorstellung was ich will, aber was letztendlich beim Drucken entsteht, gleicht eher einem Prozess. Das könnte ich im Fotolabor so nicht, da ist alles präzise festgelegt.
Druck Berlin: Wie bist du denn zum Siebdruck gekommen?
Laura: Zum Siebdruck kam ich, als ich während meines Studiums an der Kunstakademie München für eine Plakatausstellung im öffentlichen Raum 100 Plakate von 7 Motiven brauchte und Siebdruck war da einfach das einzig passende Medium.
Druck Berlin: Wie bist du auf die „Königsdiziplinen Editionen“ gekommen?
Laura: Die Königsdisziplinen Editionen sind entstanden aus der Idee mit meiner Lieblingsdisziplin Siebdruck internationale, von mir geschätzte Künstlerkollegen in einer Sammlung zusammen zubringen. Die Künstler wählen Ihre Motive selbst, die Druckfarben, schwarz und neon, und das Format der Edition allerdings sind fest definiert.
Druck Berlin: Und wer macht da mit?
Laura: Verschiedenste Disziplinen, wie Malerei, Streetart, Fotografie, Illustration, Zeichnung und Collage treffen so in einer Sammlung aufeinander. Durch die einheitliche Farbgebung entsteht einerseits ein Ganzes, gleichzeitig kommen so die vielfältigen Arbeitsweisen und -stile noch besser heraus. Besonders gefällt mir, das man mit Siebdruck erschwingliche, leckere Kunst machen kann, bei der aber jeder einzelne Druck einzigartig ist.
Druck Berlin: Woran arbeitest du gerade?
Laura: Aktuell drucke ich meine neue Serie “Karma” mit neu inszenierten indischen Gottheiten, die ich dann erstmals auf dem Druck Berlin Festival ausstelle, quasi druckfrisch.
